"Several trends in government converged to make hemp/marijuana prohibition possible. The New Deal Court had recently swept away earlier established doctrines of economic due process which had limited covert protectionist uses of government agencies. Andrew Mellon, the chief financier of the Du Ponts, had become Secretary of the Treasury and appointed his nephew, Harry Anslinger, to head the newly created Federal Bureau of Narcotics. Anslinger proceeded to misclassify marijuana, which is a mild stimulant and euphoriant, as a narcotic, and to make its prohibition his agency's top priority."

A. Richard Diebold Center for Indo-European Language and Culture, Linguistics Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin.
The term 'Old Iranian' is the designation for the sub-group of Indo-European languages which, between approximately 1350 and 350 B.C., spread across the Iranian plateau, an area bounded in the north by present-day Turkmenistan, the Caspian Sea, and the Caucasus Mountains, in the East by the Indus River, in the south by the Persian Gulf, and in the west by Mesopotamia. Of these languages, Old and Young(er) Avestan and Old Persian are textually preserved. Median, Parthian, (Old) Sogdian, Carduchi, and Scythian are also known from their mention in Greek and Hellenistic sources, but are recorded only sporadically as glosses, toponyms, and lexical borrowings by speakers of the better-attested languages.

"Justice Blackmun concluded: I do not believe the Founders thought their dearly bought freedom from religious persecution a "luxury," but an essential element of liberty--and they could not have thought religious intolerance "unavoidable" for they drafted the Religion Clause precisely in order to avoid that intolerance."

Hemp once provided the paper on which US banknotes were printed, the cloth for the original Levi jeans, as well as the sails and rigging of ships. During World War II it was of such strategic importance that the US Government encouraged farmers to convert to hemp cultivation. BILLION DOLLAR CROP illustrates how hemp is being cultivated as an industrial fiber as an alternative to wood for paper products, to cotton for clothes, and to plywood for construction."
